Later in the morning you will transfer to the domestic airport for your flight to Khajuraho. Built under Chandela kings between 950 and 1050AD and only rediscovered by a British army engineer in 1838, Khajuraho is now most famous for its impressive temples.

You will be met on arrival and driven to your lodge (approx 45 minutes) in Panna National Park. Meet your expert, who will give a briefing on the trip and the activities to follow. If time allows, there will be an evening excursion for a jungle safari.

The Ken River Lodge is situated just 26km from Khajuraho on the edge of Panna National Park. Spread throughout 30 acres of mature jungle on the banks of the Ken River, the property offers comfortable accommodation with basic facilities and is the best available in Panna in its price range.

This is a family lodge and your host Shyamendra Singh and his wife Bhawna Kumari have lovingly developed the property in keeping with the wild surroundings. A highlight is the Machaan or Tree House which overlooks the Ken River” an ideal place to watch the sunset after a day in the park!

PANNA NATIONAL PARK Panna lies a short way east of the world famous temple town of Khajuraho and features a landscape of rocky hills and ravines covered mostly by scrubby deciduous Teak, Bamboo and Sal forest.

The Ken River, which flows through the reserve from south to north, is home to Gharial and Marsh Crocodile and other aquatic fauna and offers spectacular scenery as it meanders through the region.

The terrain of the park is characterized by extensive plateaux and gorges. The topography in the Panna district part of the reserve can broadly be divided into three distinct tablelands; the upper Talgaon Plateau, the middle Hinouta Plateau and the Ken Valley. There is also a series of undulating hills and plateaux on the other side of Ken River in the Chhatarpur district.

Tiger numbers in Panna have suffered due to poaching. But the area is significant as a case study on tiger conservation. Other fauna found in Panna include jungle cat, leopard, hyaena, wild dog, wolf, sloth bear, sambar, chital, nilgai, chinkara, chausingha, porcupine, jungle cat, rusty spotted cat, hare, ratel and tree shrew. Along with the mammals, over 200 species of bird have been identified, which include a host of winter migratory birds.

Bandhavgarh is set amongst the Vindya Hills of Madhya Pradesh and consists of a core area of 105 sq km and a buffer area of approximately 400 sq km. The setting for this park is impressive and the ruins of the ancient fort provide a stunning backdrop. Also scattered around the park are archaeological remains of the Kalchin period and numerous prehistoric caves. The Maharaja of Rewa was the last occupier of the fort and managed the surrounding forest to increase his chances of a good hunt. The surrounding area was given national park status in 1968 and, during the following years, has developed into one of India's finest tiger reserves.

In addition to the tiger, it is also possible to see chousingha (small Four-horned antelope), chinkara, nilgai, porcupine, hyena, and myriad bird species.
